The Legacy of On the Streets

Education That Begins Where Young People Stand

On the Streets began with a simple, radical belief: that young people thrive when someone meets them exactly where they are.

Founded in Gorton, Manchester, the project built its reputation not through glossy strategies or short‑term initiatives, but through patient, persistent work with groups of young people who were too often overlooked by traditional services.

What made On the Streets different was its refusal to treat young people as isolated cases. Instead, it recognised the power of peer groups, friendships, and shared identity. By working with young people collectively—on their streets, in their spaces, and on their terms—the project created a sense of belonging that conventional interventions rarely achieve.

Despite widespread praise from local agencies, the project operated with minimal and inconsistent funding. Yet its impact was undeniable: thousands of attendances, hundreds of young people engaged, and countless moments where a trusted adult made the difference between drifting and direction.

The legacy of On the Streets is more than a programme. It is a philosophy of education rooted in community, dignity, and hope. It reminds us that meaningful change doesn’t come from imitation or bureaucracy—it comes from backing the people who show up, day after day, for the young people who need them most.

Today, that legacy will continue to inspire schools, youth workers, and community leaders who believe that every young person deserves to be seen, supported, and celebrated and each family acccepted and supported to pursue their own aspirations.
